Embark on a captivating journey into the mysteries of the great outdoors with the young adventurers of Wulai (烏來)!
In the heart of the towering mountains of Wulai lies a picturesque valley named "Doll Valley" (娃娃谷). It is within this enchanting setting that our delightful story unfolds...
Driven by a collective effort, the school community creates an ecological pond, where a diverse array of plants is lovingly nurtured. As the water becomes cleaner, an array of animals and insects take up residence. Tree frogs become proud parents, dragonflies and damselflies lay their eggs, crabs burrow to find sustenance, while dragon lice, water scorpions, and water striders all make appearances.
The valley becomes a daily rendezvous for curious children, now the most beautiful corner of the school!
A word from the author: The inspiration behind this book began when the elementary school I served secured funding for campus improvement in 2004.
Through the creation and stewardship of an ecological pond, the school aimed to provide a sanctuary for plants and animals to thrive, and to create a space for the community to connect with the wonders of nature.
Sweating alongside the children with shovels in hand, the staff worked for approximately half a year until the pond's completion.
Soon after its completion, various creatures found their new home, and the vegetation around the pond flourished. The school's once-empty courtyard transformed into a picturesque backyard, where children often see many aquatic insects and frogs.
Before this project, I had no idea the incredible impact a human-made pond can have. I had seen many "ecological" ponds that were merely cement structures. This pond-building experience truly opened my eyes — witnessing the living changes in the surrounding ecosystem left me awestruck by the profound forces of nature.
This book was inspired by that experience, and hopes sharing this heartwarming tale with others.
