Walking home alone is one of the first steps towards independence
Today is the first day Jing (景兒) will walk home alone without his big brother.
When he reached the little path on the mountain, he recalled how his big brother would lightly pat the cow's back. So he did the same.
He didn't expect the Mama cow to moo loudly towards him though, and that scared him.
When he got to the small creek, Jing remembered that his big brother would jump right over it. So he did the same.
His feet got a little wet, but he managed to cross it.
When he got the dandelion field, he remembered that his big brother would pluck one and blow on them.
It took him several tries to break one off, but he finally did and managed to blow away the dandelion seeds.
Set against the beautifully illustrated backdrop, we are taken along for a journey as a child interacts and plays with elements of nature. Jing is initially scared, but through past observations of his brother taking the same path and then mimicking them, we can see his desire to grow up — a feeling many young readers can relate to.
And it turns out, in every scene of the story, you will find Jing's brother has been hiding nearby, quieting watching over him... :)
