This is a wordless picture book that uses simple and delicate black pen drawings as backdrop, as it guides readers through the alleys and streets of Beijing.
In a courtyard in Beijing, a little girl follows a black cat through the door. The little girl, donning a bright red dress against the monochrome setting, suddenly finds herself being led through space and time by a young emperor, who had jumped out from an old photo.
This is a beautifully illustrated book that takes the readers on a tour through Beijing's historical and cultural landmarks, like the Forbidden City, to the Temple of Heaven. They also walk through recent architectural wonders, like the "Bird's Nest", built for the Beijing Olympics.
Sun Hsin Yu, award winning illustrator, masterfully blends the old and new cultures through her drawings in this gorgeous book.
At the end of the book, there is an extended reading section that goes into each site in more detail, allowing our readers to "compare" what they saw on their journey with the little girl, to the real-life structure in photos.
