Once your child starts to read, we want to gradually expand their vocabulary. Chinese Idioms is a big part of the language and should be an integral part of their vocabulary.
Each book features four Chinese idioms presented in comic form. The idioms are selected to correspond to the reading capabilities at each level, told by the same characters that our young readers are already familiar with from the Basic Chinese 500 books. It explains what each idiom means, and when and how to use them, all in the form of a comic.
By the time your younger reader has completed Lesson 8 of Beginning Reader (Level 1) in Basic Chinese 500, they will be able to read 七上八下. By lesson 10, they can read 一五一十. Before they even finish the whole Level 1, they will already be able to read 五花八門 and 開門見山.
Because the featured idioms are made up of characters that your child already knows, it will take very little extra effort. When your child realizes how the simple characters that they know, can be combined to create a different word with a different level of meaning, they will be fascinated by the power of language, and hopefully pique their interest and boost their confidence.
The best way for children to learn is through laughing and having fun. Learning idioms are no different. This is why there's a "funny version" of each idiom included to make it more memorable and interesting (for both parent and child ;P)!
Through fun dialogue in the style of comic books, little readers can now apply the characters they know in a new and relevant way - learning Chinese idioms!
