To Kwa Wan (土瓜灣) is a district in Hong Kong that once had a glorious industrial history!

The countless factories built at the time created seemingly limitless business opportunities. Cotton textiles, among many others, were once a top-ranked export of Hong Kong. There were numerous large scale textile mills operating in To Kwa Wan such as Nanyang Cotton Mill (南洋紗廠), Eastern Cotton Mills (東方紗廠) and Wyler Textiles (偉倫紗廠).

However, as the factories moved north in the 1980s, and with the transformation of Hong Kong's economy, To Kwa Wan's manufacturing industry declined, and we're now left with the traces of this industrious period through former factory buildings still left standing...

Visiting Factories with Grandpa is a bilingual story full of memories from the old factories of To Kwa Wan. Following the steps of a grandpa and his little granddaughter, we walk into abandoned old factories of To Kwa Wan, where industrial development flourished back in the 1950s and 60s. In them, young readers will learn about what once was a "golden era" of manufacturing in Hong Kong.

What will you discover behind these factory doors? What makes a tannery stink? Where do toys come from? Does soda come indifferent flavours?

Let’s explore the factories of To Kwa Wan with Grandpa to find out!

History is sometimes difficult to explain in a few words, so the creators of the book made an AR (augmented reality) app with real-life photos, animations and mini-games as an interactive and fun way to encourage parents and children to read together and discover this part of Hong Kong history!
